CHAPTER TEN

Jesse

Three days. It had been three days since Jenny had called to say that they'd found her. Three days since I'd raced across the country on the four-hour drive to the hospital, only to find her gone. She was meant to be coming here, so what was taking so damn long? It was four hours away. Two-hundred-and-forty minutes. So why the hell was I walking the streets three days later with no sign of her?

The wait was driving me insane. Each minute that passed I became more certain that Jenny had been wrong. That the Sebastian guy wasn't the person she had she believed him to be. He was Avery's brother for fuck's sake, of course he was as corrupt and rotten as that no good lowlife. Jenny said they were half-brothers, but they had the same evil running through their veins.

A small commotion in πr2 Away drew my attention. These last few days I'd walked the streets more times than I could count, circling constantly like a vulture. It only took a second for me to recognise the excited tones of Dotty's voice, but more interesting were the words coming out of her mouth.

"So I thought I'd take her some of your pies down. Gave us quite the scare up and vanishing like that, and I don't think I've ever seen Jesse look so distraught. Hopefully, the girl just needed a minute to clear her mind, can't say I blame her when she's used to people like her daddy." I heard Phoebe reply but not what she said. "Sure, I'll send her your way for a good old fashioned—oh, Detective." Dotty bustled through the door onto the cobbled pavement, her eyes bright with the smile she flashed my way. Her hand rose to pat her short, curled hair, the soft ivory tones of her purple rinse reflecting brightly in the fading light. "I hear Andy's back in town, glad you kids resolved whatever it was that's been eating you up."

She was back? When? How had I missed her coming home? I'd been parading these streets like a sentry, hoping to catch sight of her. "When did she get back?" My heart fluttered. I take back everything I thought about Sebastian. Maybe.

The way Dotty frowned made me think she'd thought I had already known. The cool October breeze whistled through the streets, carrying with it the cool mist that was rolling in from the ocean, making the pavement shimmer in the amber glow of the streetlight that flickered on behind us as the sun began its descent. I glanced at my watch, barely able to believe it was already half-six. "A few hours back."

"Let me take those." There was a desperate edge to my voice, and if I heard it, I knew she had to. Her grip tightened on the boxes. "Dotty, I screwed up. I need an excuse to see her." She tsked at me. While no one but Doc and Rob knew exactly what went down between
